What to Wear at Moraine Lake — Complete Packing Guide
The lakes can be cold even in summer. Here's exactly what to pack for a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
Moraine Lake vs Lake Louise — Which Should You Visit?
Both lakes are stunning but different. We compare them side by side so you can decide — or visit both!
Best Time to Visit Moraine Lake & Lake Louise
June — Early Season
June is when Moraine Lake typically becomes accessible after the winter closure. Snow may still be visible on the peaks, creating dramatic scenery. Crowds are moderate early in the month but build toward late June.
July & August — Peak Season
The most popular months with warm temperatures (15-25°C), full trail access, and the most vibrant turquoise water colour. Expect larger crowds — booking your shuttle in advance is essential during this period.
September & October — Best Kept Secret
September is arguably the best month to visit. Crowds thin out, the larches turn golden yellow around mid-September, and the weather is still pleasant. This is our personal favourite time of year.
November — Closing Season
Moraine Lake road typically closes in mid-November. Lake Louise remains accessible year-round but winter conditions require proper preparation.
Our Recommendation
For the best balance of good weather, manageable crowds, and stunning scenery — visit in early July or September. Book your shuttle early as departures fill up fast during peak season.

Layer Up — Even in Summer
Moraine Lake sits at 1,885 metres elevation. Even on warm summer days, temperatures at the lake can be 5-10°C cooler than in Banff town. Wind off the glacier adds to the chill.

Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is smaller, more remote, and many visitors consider it the more dramatic of the two. Surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks, the famous turquoise colour is unlike anything else in the world. Access is restricted — you must take a shuttle or bike to get there.
Lake Louise
Lake Louise is larger, more accessible, and home to the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel. The lake is stunning with its emerald green colour and glacier backdrop. You can walk the lakeshore, kayak, or hike to the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse.
Key Differences
- Moraine Lake — more dramatic, smaller, restricted access
- Lake Louise — larger, more facilities, hotel and restaurants nearby
- Moraine Lake access fee required (included in your shuttle ticket)
- Lake Louise — free with a National Parks pass
Our Recommendation
Visit both! Our shuttle takes you to both lakes in one trip. Most visitors say Moraine Lake is their highlight — but Lake Louise never disappoints either. You get the best of both worlds in a single 4.5-hour trip.
